BENJI

When I get home later, Mom and Rita are sitting on the couches in the living room binge-watching some shitty reality dating show. I’ve explained about a thousand times that it’s all bullshit; the contestants are actors or models, or at least want to be. But they like the drama, so they don’t care.

To be honest, I don’t, either. Anything that distracts Mom from her wine and pills for a while can’t be too bad.

“Benji, join us!”

Mom sounds a little tipsy when I duck my head in to say hi, but the bottle of wine is on the coffee table by Rita—out of her reach and not quite empty—so she’s doing well for this time of night. I give her a kiss on the cheek when she waves me in, but I don’t stay. Still dirty from messing around with Milo on the trail, I head upstairs to shower instead.

One thing I can’t wash off: the stupid grin on my face.

I could get used to this thing with Milo. Being around him makes me feel good. He puts ideas in my head. The idea I’m worth more than I am. The idea I’m not so bad after all.

I don’t deserve it, especially since it comes with a price—breaking my promise to Kellan—but, fuck, how I want it. How I want Milo.

I won’t hurt him. I swear to god, Kell. I won’t let you down this time. I’ll treat him like a prince. I won’t fuck this up.

After showering, I camp out in my room, watching TV and wondering if it’s too soon to text Milo. The weekend’s almost here. We should do something—something else Kellan liked. Another tribute. I reach for my cell phone off the nightstand to suggest it when I hear the ping of an incoming message.

That stupid grin on my face widens as I think it might be Milo. I bet I even have that dimple on my cheek.

But when I check my messaging app, nothing’s new. My only unread text message came in from Aunt Chrissy a couple of hours ago.

Weird.

There’s another ping. Whole minutes pass before I realize the sound is coming from my hamper. I dive through my dirty laundry and dig out Kellan’s cell phone, still tucked in one of the pockets of my jeans from earlier. Holy shit, I can’t believe I almost washed it. I could have ruined Milo’s last lifeline to his brother.

Way to go, asshole.

The screen lights up when I touch it, and a preview of the most recent message pops up.

Milo: All’s good with Benji. *eggplant *sweat droplet* I got dirt in places I never knew existed. Pretty sure I ruined my dance leggings, too.

I chuckle. Another one of Milo’s séance-texts to Kellan. He must not realize I forgot to return the phone to his backpack at the Audubon Center.

Oh, I’m going to have fun with this.

I settle back on my bed and enter Kellan’s passcode for the second time tonight. Then, I pop a piece of spearmint gum and let my fingers roam over the phone’s keyboard.
